Ex Certification

Choosing the Right Ex Certification for Global Compliance

When it comes to Ex-rated (explosion-protected) electrical equipment, choosing the right certification is crucial—especially if you’re aiming for broad international compliance.

Some of the main approval types include:

  • UL or FM – Based on the United States National Electrical Code. Also accepted in some countries in the Middle East.

  • CSA – Based on the Canadian Electrical Code.

  • ATEX – The certification standard used within the European Union.

  • IECEx – The International Electrotechnical Commission System for certification to standards relating to equipment for use in explosive atmospheres. Recognised in Australia and many countries outside the EU, including parts of the Middle East.

So, which one should you choose?

The answer is most often IECEx. Aside from legacy systems like AUSEx and the more recent ANZEx, IECEx is now considered the most widely accepted certification type for Ex-rated equipment in Australia.

It provides international credibility and meets the compliance requirements for hazardous area installations in a growing number of countries.
