Hazardous Area Conformity Assessment

Hazardous Area Certification in Australia: What You Need to Know

In Australia, the recognised types of hazardous area certification include AUSEx and ANZEx. AUSEx has now been superseded by ANZEx, which is largely based on, and in many cases identical to, the IECEx certification system. IECEx is a legally accepted form of compliance in Australia and is considered the gold standard for hazardous area equipment certification.

However, ATEX (European), US NEC certification, and other foreign certification types are not accepted for use in Australia unless the equipment has also been tested to IECEx standards. If not, it must undergo a professional conformity assessment, commonly known as a Conformity Assessment Document (CAD), before it can be legally used.

If you’re planning to import machinery or equipment from overseas, it is strongly recommended that you consult with BSE Australia before doing so. Non-compliant equipment can lead to significant unforeseen costs, project delays, and most importantly, serious safety risks.

At BSE Australia (Ex Division, Sydney), we’ve helped many clients navigate this complex compliance landscape. Our expertise has saved clients thousands of dollars by avoiding costly mistakes and ensuring their equipment meets all necessary regulatory requirements.
