Hazardous Area Technical Information
Guidelines for Identifying Hazardous Areas
Checklist of Typical Hazardous Areas
The following list includes common hazardous areas as well as some less obvious locations where flammable gases, vapours, liquids, or combustible dusts may be present. This list is not exhaustive, and any other areas suspected of containing such hazards should be carefully assessed.
Flammable liquid cabinets
(Usually require appropriate signage and exclusion markings, but not a Verification Dossier if no electrical installations are present in the associated hazardous area.)Explosives areas
Vehicle workshops
Vehicle parking and standing areas
(Particularly underground or enclosed spaces where ventilation is restricted.)Fuel dispensing stations
Fuel storage tanks and ventilation pipes
Pollution control equipment
Vessel ullage areas
Waste collection storage vessels, drains, sumps, or pits
Aircraft hangars and refuelling areas
Above-ground fuel storage tanks
Underground fuel storage tanks
Packaged fuel storage areas
Fuel loading facilities
Waste liquids collection and drainage areas
Gas equipment installations
Fume cupboards and laboratories
Flammable medical agents storage
Anaesthetising areas
Sewage treatment plants
Surface coatings and adhesives application areas
Finishing processes
(Including paint and lacquer operations)Vessels containing flammable liquids
Degreasing and cleaning processes
Ammonia systems
Refineries
Grain silos, dust hoppers, bag emptying stations, cyclones, and filters
(Part of suction extraction systems)LPG vessels
LNG vessels
Aerosol manufacturing facilities
Sugar mills
Distilleries
Organic waste depots
If you suspect any other areas might pose a risk of flammable atmospheres, a thorough hazard assessment should be conducted to confirm.
